Down And Out, Then Rising Again

The following is a short piece from our EIC HD, explaining why HD in Effect was on another hiatus recently. Hint: personal issues.

"While we were extremely impressed with the entire pool of applicants, we regret to inform you that after further review we will not be able to offer you an Editorial Fellowship with our company at this time. Please note that we are unable to provide specific feedback to candidates.

A variety of full-time opportunities are currently available at Atlantic Media, and we welcome you to visit our website, www.atlanticmedia.com, to learn about our openings.

Thank you again for your interest in our company. We wish you the best in your professional endeavors."

And with that, my journalistic plans for Summer 2015 died instantly. CUNY rejected me for their Knight Summer Internship program days before; the Livingston Awards didn't think my co-incidentally named Kyam Livingiston piece deserved $10,000. Atlantic Media was my last hope. And in under 150 words they said, "Eff your hope and your dreams, HD."

This was supposed to be my summer-the one to rebirth my reporting hopes.

I'd become a finalist in both the CUNY and Atlantic fellowships. Made it to the Top 40 from a pool of 100+ students in the former, and to the second screening stage from over 2,000 applicants in the latter.

I believed I'd at least get chosen for one of these opportunities. Never did I suspect that all three would tell me no. Maybe they're aware of my radical works I've published here?

Atlantic's rejection was the haymaker that put me down after CUNY delivered the right cross that got me wobbly. And after it happened, I figured it was best to lay there on that metaphorical mat, face flat as the imaginary elk-headed referee with the unicorn horn counted to 10.

While I was down there as spectators cheered my defeat, I knew I needed time off from writing to heal my depression. Not to mention, my psuedo-realistic head wounds.

And thus why, up until recently, HD in Effect hasn't been updating.Somehow through my muffled wails, I managed to send a message to the staff, telling them that I'm too busy feeling sorry for myself to man this ship. And nobody else is allowed to run the site without me. Well, except Mickey The Mildly Maurading Intern sometimes. He does some good stuff.

But during our hiatus (my assistants showed me updates while I lay prone looking up at the lights), I noticed that you guys kept on "liking" our Facebook page in record droves. And as of this post, that number stands at a solid 155. Insane. It's apparent something we keep doing here is working.

So in retropect, I realized that I couldn't stay down forever. And with the help of God the Flying Spaghetti Monster damnit Mickey! Stop messing with the strikethrough! you all, I managed to realize that this is just another setback that I can't keep moping about. Yes, I don't know what comes next. Or just how-if ever-will I break into the reporting industry and make a full time living in it.

But at least I still have ya'll. And that's worth...something? Yeah-let's go with that. '
