An Open Letter To Oh So Selfless NYC City Council Members

Update: In perhaps one of the most surprising votes in Council history, the bastards voted for the raise. And guess who's gonna be funding it?

Management: The following is a letter our EIC wrote in response to today's NYC City Council vote on giving themselves a 32% pay raise.

Dear NYC City Council-specifically Ydanis Rodriguez,

Hi! So I heard you guys are voting on giving yourselves a pay raise from $112K to $148K a year today. A 32% increase! Wow! That's sooooo super! Who wouldn't jump at the chance to vote on jacking up their yearly coinage? You'd be crazier than a Donald Trump racial tolerance PSA not to!

You guys totally deserve it. What, with allyourdamncorruption and outside payments and-wait, what's that? For this raise, you'd have to give up all your outside income sources? Not bad, peeps. Not bad.

We should end this on a lovely remark about how you politicians are all trustworthy. But we have a teensy bone to pick with Councilman Rodriguez. During a Wednesday hearing on the pay proposal, Mr. Rodriguez said he thinks it should be $175K.

“We have a right to make a living to support our families, he said. “This is not our first job. ... We have master’s. We have Ph.D.s. For me, $148,000 is a big compromise that we’re doing.”

Mr Rodriguez, you realize most New Yorkers are making a living and supporting their families on less than half your salary suggestion?

You also realize that the $36K raise you and your pals are probably getting is already way more than what your staffers receive?

You know, the people who sold your lies to enough New Yorkers so they'd elect you, enabling this cash flow to begin with? The same ones who'll probably sleep under the Manhattan Bridge tonight while you dine in the Manhattan Masterpiece?

Also, that for many New Yorkers, the jobs paying them garbage rates aren't their first? And that little over 25% of them have their college degrees as well (which could be better, but likely isn't the worst)?

You don't?

Oh, you'll have to forgive me for that. I've been too busy spending the last week making fucking bike deliveries on minimum wage in easily the most dangerous city to do that in. I literally meet death face to face almost every day out there on these Big Apple streets. My left foot is in screaming pain from 11 months of full-time pedaling: I've been limping everywhere these last few days.

Whatever little money I make that doesn't go to rent or groceries goes to taxes, student loans, life insurance, bike repairs, turtle food and out of pocket health insurance-at $145/month.

And just like you, this isn't my first job. Matter of fact, 2016 marks 10 years since I started my very first job. And I have a college degree to boot.

So, boss, where do I-and countless others-sign up to vote on our 32% pay increases?

I await your response,

(In)Sincerely,

HD
