We Honor Workers, The REAL Heroes, On This Memorial Day

Today marks another Memorial Day. It's a time where latent patriots burst "Thank you for your service" messages on Facebook, drape their dogs in American flags and boost the narrative of soldiers having fought for their freedoms.

It's so touching. Which is why we're sorry to say this, but this couldn't be further from reality.

Our troops never fought for our "liberties." Not in any way, shape or form. Not in Nazi Germany. Not in Vietnam. And certainly not in Iraq or Afghanistan.

Anyone who has ever served has fought for G.O.D.: Gold, Oil and Drugs, with side orders of murdered black and brown youth to boot. Unfortunately, they were innocent pawns in imperialist chess games.

Any so called "freedoms" we have today (i.e. the eight hour work day, unemployment, child labor laws) came solely as a result of continuous workers' struggle.

Also, considering that the average black person can't walk down an American street without some cops wanting to dig in their asses, there's a very racist component to this "freedom" rhetoric.

Matter of fact, the original Memorial Day was started by freed slaves in 19th Century South Carolina, honoring the dead Union soldiers who did die in helping them escape slavery, per the Blue Street Journal.

So today, HD in Effect honors workers-the only people who have ever fought for any benefits we enjoy today.

Salute!
